My wife (@girl_named_Mike) listens to more hardcore things in metal then I do. but this works for me dammit! Some awesome albums dropped between 2011 and 2012, and some more I'm in anticipation for. Here is my quick top 5 Albums for 2011-2012.
5. Trivium - In Waves (2011 Roadrunner Records)
Mikelene got me into Trivium and damn, I was missing some great music. This album was fantastic! After catching up on the previous albums I got to say, I like this one the best, (trolls, bring it on.) but a lot of that has to do with the way I like my music. It fits in every groove I love. The lyrics are amazing, the vocal range of Matt Heafy is beautiful. Hitting amazing sounds really controlling his voice like a perfectly tuned instrument. We just Trivium live with In Flames a few months back, and it was an awesome show. 'In Waves' (the title track) is one of my favorite opening songs to an album in years. Looking forward to more from these guys.
4. Machine Head - Unto The Locust (2011 Roadrunner Records)
Now, I have been a Machine Head fanboy for a long, long LONG ass time. Like, to the point that I even loved all of Supercharger. Low and behold, after all these years, they come back with something, like this. Unto the Locust brings back that heavy sound but infuses it with the melody and characteristically Machine Head sound. It's that perfect album every band wants to achieve. From the high quality of recording, the mixing was beautiful and Robert Flynn nails you to a wall with every lyric. My fan boy-ism went up again after this.
3. Serj Tankian - Harakiri (2012 Reprise, Serjical Strike)
I cannot get enough System of a Down. Or Serj for that matter. I wasn't a huge fan of Elect the Dead, but Harakiri revived my love for his style of... well.. awesomeness. If you don't think you'll like it, give it a shot. Truly let yourself listen to it, and you very well might see what I see.
2. Spineshank - Anger Denial Acceptance (2012 Century Media)
I love me some Spineshank. I have a deep seeded infatuation with this band. In fact, THIS is the band that first brought my wife and I together all those years ago. our combined love for a great band. So, needless to say, they will always be awesome in my books. I've read some nasty ass reviews if this album, and this, that, but heres the bottom line as far as I am concerned. To me, they took the best parts for every record they have done, and mashed into one. The raw vocal recordings from Strictly Diesel, the catchiness of Height of Callousness, and the melodic cohesiveness of Self-Destructive Pattern. Say what you will about this album, but I love it.
1. Project 86 - Wait For The Sirens (2012 Atlantic?)
Give me your biggest schoolgirl O.M.G. for this one. Damn, I seriously cannot wait for this album to drop. I've been waiting a long ass time for a new P86 album and now after they just release their 2nd track off the album (Click here). I go into fanboy fuck yeaaaaaaahs. Love the sound, changing with the times while keeping that base of what P86 is. Andrew Schwab is a genius. No, really he is. Read up on him, he's an amazing guy. I stand in eagerness to fork over my cash for this album.
