Hello fellow music lovers! I have one awesome profile here today for an awesome band from the UK called Altered Sky. I first heard these rockers about a month ago and fell in love instantly. The sound is fun and exciting with tons of energy. Yet another in my growing profiles for female fronted bands, I highly encourage you to pick up the EP's and singles to hear and enjoy this amazing band.

Last week I was fortunate enough to get my quick Q&A sent out to them and they promptly replied. I was excited to see the responses and I think you all will enjoy this interview as much as I did.

For those who don't know, who are you, what do you do and how did you all come together?

Helloooo! We are Altered Sky – a rock band from Scotland, made up of two girls: Ana (vocals) and Amy (drums) and three guys: Rich and Neil (guitars) and Ross (bass). We started as a band in March 2010: initially as session players to rehearse and record some songs Ana had written. We had so much fun at the first rehearsal together that we formed as a band soon after, coming up with the name Altered Sky during a very drunk evening which involved watching The Wizard Of Oz on DVD in a caravan. We played our first show around a month later, and have been gigging as much as possible around the UK ever since.

Who are your main inspirations for your writing?

Video games! Mainly Final Fantasy and Silent Hill, the ones with really cool Japanese music. Also true crime stories and lots and lots of Sonic the Hedgehog!

What band would you love to tour with?

Oooooh lots and lots! We’d love to get involved with something like the Warped Tour one day! Watching the videos of the shows and the backstage shenanigans, it looks insane!

What is each members hidden talent?

Ana does an amazing impression of Gizmo from Gremlins! The wee song he sings, Ana can do it perfectly - it’s freaky! Neil’s stomach can inflate to consume massive amounts of fast food without him getting fat (we call his tray full of greasy burgers and things a Neil-Meal) Rich is a geologist by day: he gets to swing around on ropes and look at rocks. Amy can make a really loud clown horn noise (which is the BEST way of communicating at gigs) also ask Ross about his pumpkin impression!

What brands of instruments and mics do you play/use?

Ana: Sennheiser E950 – it’s soooo good to have my own mic on stage! I used to have to use a different one every night, so the sound was always different and I had to learn it as the set went on. The Sennheiser sounds good and I know what I need to do to get the best from it: I feel more comfortable using it, so can hopefully sing better!

Rich: Fender Telecaster Blacktop and Blackstar HT-Stage 100 – I love the versatility and sheer number of different noises I can get from the Blacktop! It copes beautifully with smooth clean tones right through to crunching distortion and solo lead lines. (It’s also a pretty shade of red!). The Blackstar head running into my ENGL cab is a mighty sounding combination: loud as hell and solid as a rock (also brutally heavy to lift up stairs). For effects I keep it pretty simple: just a Vox Time Machine for delay and a Boss CH-1 Chorus. The one thing I can’t gig without is my earplugs – I take them everywhere with me!

Neil: The Marshall JCM900 and Gibson Les Paul combination is a tried and tested rock classic! I keep my gear as simple as possible, being a guitar tech I spent some time modding the lester to allow me to get Strat sounds as well, beyond that it’s pretty much Guitar into amp. Minimal effects, Boss DD-3 Delay, CH-1 Chorus and an absolutely brilliant pedal called the MXR Micro-Amp which I use for a solo boost. I do use my Cry-Baby Classic Wah from time to time and keep a Metal Muff distortion handy in case the Amp breaks down.

Ross: Yamaha RBX JM - a completely excessive 6-string monster! It has such a smooth tone one minute then a crunching top-end punch the next. I use Hartke amps – they deliver the ultimate punch and clarity that lends me the tone I desire, plus my 4x10”+1x12” stack is almost as tall as me! (Ross is 6’4”!)

Amy: Mapex shells and Zildjian cymbals. My Mapex kit was the first I ever bought and I’m still in love with it! Zildjian have made the best cymbals in the world forever and so many great drummers have used them. They’re also really shiny! I use a Mapex Black Panther snare and I also use Vic Firth sticks: in my opinion they’re the best weighted sticks out there and I swear by them!

What was the greatest show you ever played up to this point?

The best show so far is probably the one we played at the HMV Picturehouse in Edinburgh in September supporting a band called Lost In Audio. It was by far the largest show we’ve played so far: to a crowd of around 900 people. The loudness of everyone in the crowd was incredible! We were really spurred on to play better and also to enjoy ourselves and bring more energy to our performance. There were loads of photos taken that night - in virtually all of them at least one of us (usually Rich) has a big cheesy grin on their face!

When are we getting new music? New videos?

Soooon! Two new videos for songs on the In This World EP are in the pipeline and we’re also hard at work in the studio writing and recording demos for a new release which will be unleashed sometime in the new year! If you want a sneaky peek at the new songs, come to a show: we love testing new songs out on a live audience!

Social Media like twitter, plays such a huge part in spreading the word of a band, you guys are fast approaching 10,000 twitter followers. If you could say one thing to them all in 140 characters or less, what would you say?

“Thank you ALL so much for your support! Wherever you are in the world, we WILL come and see you on tour one day and thank you in person! <3”

(yes it’s a REALLY soppy 139 characters, but it’s true!)

Why should people pick up an Altered Sky album?

IT’S GOT A GIANT GOBSTOPPER ON THE FRONT!!! If that’s not reason enough, we don’t know what is… It also contains a CD with five songs that we’re really proud of: Each showing something different about what we do. There’s a wide range of styles on the EP - from the clean ballad Shining White Star to the hard rocking title track In This World. There’s also wee hints of pop-punk and prog thrown in there as well! Hopefully you’ll have a listen and enjoy the songs… they’re just a gobstopperry taster of what we’ve got coming next!

Oh hot damn boys and girls! Here we go bringing you one more amazing kick ass, epic, awesome (and so on) band profile! This time we have one of my recent top of the list favorite bands: CHARETTA!!

Now, according to the site, www.charetta.com, not many knows what the band name means, and I wasn't gonna be a tool and go and ask them about it, (I'm a shy person. No, really.) So instead, I've decided it has something to do with Pokemon and the appetizer Bruschetta. Well, most likely I'm completely wrong but for now, it works.

This band is ridiculously amazing. It honestly blew me away when I was passed along this band from a twitter friend. Amazing vocals by a beautiful lady, music that punches a whole in your musical heart and passion that is felt through every song, Charetta is one to watch and get on board with now. they are going places, and probably going to make a ton more money then I will. (Just saying here. Oh yeah, click on my sponsors and help a poor blogger out. HA!! Shameless promotion For the Win!)

I got a chance to ask a few questions to this amazing band and as usual, it's not a hard hitting question type thing. I'm not all about grinding out that juicy gossip and crap. Just easy going questions. I hope you enjoy.

1. The 5 of you have all been extremely busy between touring, videos, recording etc. What do you each do on the down time? What's the main hobbies you got?

Pablo: Spend time with my family. It's a hard thing to juggle: my personal life with my music, but my family is so supportive. Oh, and I love tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons (maybe I should keep that to myself!)

Angelina: My down time? Anything forensic pathologist/murder mystery related! - 'Bones' is my favorite show

Chris: I love stand-up comedy and comedy podcasts. I listen to Adam Carollas podcast every day. I think if I wasn't pursuing music, I would definitely do something in that area. I love to make people laugh...generally at the expense of being socially appropriate.

Adonis: Spending time with my kids.

Mollo: I enjoy working out at the gym, doing other fitness related activities and playing sports with my 7 year old cousin.

2. Out of all the tours you have done with amazing bands, whose the one band/artist you wish you could tour with? Or, I suppose if you wanna take the easy road, who would tour with again?

Pablo: For a current band I would love to go on tour with Chevelle or Staind. For my all time favorite band I would say Dokken or Lynch Mob (anything George Lynch is involved in at the time).

Angelina: I'd like to tour with "In this Moment" and "Halestorm" . Their latest albums were so amazing - and I think their fans would like us as well.

Chris: I'd love to tour with Linkin Park because not only are they my favorite band, but I'd love to see their equipment setup with the samples, keyboards, e-drums, etc. Gear nerd moment there. Not to mention the touring experience they have.

Adonis: I love Sevendust, it would probably be awesome to tour with them. Evanescence and In This Moment would probably be good fits for us because of the female front person thing.

Mollo: I would love to tour with DARK NEW DAY cause I think they were a great band and would be cool if they reunited for a tour. Plus it would be pretty awesome to tour with Brett who recorded our first EP and full length album.

3. I have a huge soft spot for Female fronted bands. Charetta even topping my Top 5 list for that (http://bit.ly/R4gSSa), but for the longest time, having a female lead was almost shunned. Have you run into any haters?

Pablo: Music is so diverse and personal, it's hard to please everyone. When Nirvana first came into the scene, I was going through my "speed metal" phase, so I was "hating" on them, but looking back you can see how amazing they were and it really comes down to songwriting and painting a "picture" with your music that will appeal to others.

Angelina: I get the "I hate all female rock singers but I love you" - shucks I hope that's what they all say to all the Chicks in bands! The great Ladies of rock don't get enough credit!

Chris - definitely have some haters, but we view that as a compliment. You have to be doing well for people to be critical. We also take it as a challenge to win them over and prove them wrong. Adds a little fuel to our fire.

Adonis: Unfortunately we do have a few haters around. we've read some trash talking online and stuff...Whatever that grade school stuff doesn't bother us at all.

Mollo: I think it is more of a strength for us, because people generally like to see an attractive female front woman that is a good singer. I haven’t come across too much hating in that regard.

4. Natural follow up question: how about creeps and stalkers? Get a lot of those?

Pablo: I get them all the time! Oh, you meant Angelina. Okay, I don't get any stalkers.

Angelina: Just Mollo but I managed to cage him up when he misbehaves - "DelCarmen DogHOUSE" but he seems to like it

-Two types of people. Those who like it, and those who lie about not liking it. lol

Chris - Nah. We make an effort to interact with fans the best we can before and after shows, and most everyone is cool. Sometimes its hard because you get pulled in a few different directions, but we encourage people to come up and say hello. We never get tired of meeting the people who are supporting our dream. Our fans are great.

Adonis: we have few creeps and stalkers, we call them fans...LOL and we love them all!

Mollo: Creeps and stalkers make the best groupies. Love em!

5. What brands of instruments and mics do you play/use?

Pablo: I've always played Les Pauls (left handed), with Bareknuckle pups in the bridge, aptly named "Painkillers" (my favorite Judas Priest album!). As for amps, I have an endorsement deal with FUCHS amps and using their Mantis high gain amp model. Everyone at FUCHS have been so supportive; I love them! I'm also using Hermit Cabs (ISO cabs), with Scumback speakers. Yup, I'm a tone freak!

Angelina: Currently and Audix and Shure IEM monitor system!

Chris - ESP Guitars, Axe-FX II amp modeling, and Orange Cabinets.

Adonis: Im endorsed by Vic Firth Sticks, Beato bags and Evans drum heads, I love them used them before I got a deal. I use Drum Workshop drums and an array of different cymbals.

Mollo: Spector basses, Ampeg amplifiers & D’addario strings.

6. What was the greatest show you ever played?

Pablo: I would say my favorite show would be this summer at Gramercy Theatre.

Angelina: We work so hard every show feels better and better so "our last one"

Chris: Similar to Ange's answer - tends to be the most recent one, as its freshest in your memory. For me, I enjoyed our headlining gig at The Gramercy Theatre in NYC this past summer. We just wrapped up a 3 week stint on the road, and as a band, we have never been tighter.

Adonis: I have to agree with Chris and Ange, Our last headlining show at Gramercy Theater in NYC was one of our highlights.

Mollo: the sold-out Irving Plaza show in July, 2011. Hottest day of the year and hottest show of the year as well.

7. When are we getting new music? New videos?

Pablo: We're working on it, writing new material right now and hope to release it very soon!

Angelina: New Music- we're writing A LOT at once. When you're at this point in your music career- it's time to take your time writing the best album you can. For us that's at least till next year. New videos will follow- and there will also be a media/photo book.

8. If you had a chance to colab with one artist/producer who would it be?

Pablo: I would have to go with Bob Rock. Yup, I'm old school.

Angelina: I'd love to work with Rihanna and her team. I'd love to write her a song and then just have sing a little and dance a lot on our next music video. Yes, I love a pop star....

Chris: Staying on my Linkin Park theme, I'd say Mike Shinoda. I'm a fan of everything he does as an artist, and he's been involved with a lot of different genres on the production side of things.

Adonis: Im a big fan of Nuno Bettancour and would love to work with him one day.

Mollo: Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath – cause they are like gods.

9. Why should people pick up a Charetta album?

Pablo: Because it freakin' rocks! Without giving a sound bite, I would say that the latest album showcases a band that's been together for four years, playing, writing, getting to know each other, but most importantly, becoming good friends. I can honestly say I love writing music with my friends, and it shows in the songs. It's a collaborations of our pain, struggles, overcoming obstacles, and we do it because we believe in music.

Angelina: Because they're "front lady curious"

Chris: Because we write music that is honest and true to ourselves...I know, how corny. haha. But seriously – it’s amazing how people can recognize something that is genuine vs something that is manufactured to capitalize on the latest trend. Honest music always has a way of shining through, regardless of whats popular at the moment. Cliche, but true.

Adonis:I think we have the ability to appeal to more that one audience with some songs being of the straight acoustic variety and others a more straight ahead rock.

Mollo: Because the bass player is so damn sexy.

10. Finally, what do you have going on? What's next for Charetta? What's the news?

Chris: We've been a little quiet lately in terms of announcements and shows due to the fact we are working hard on new music. We are really excited about the new material we are working on right now, and that has been our main focus at the moment.

Adonis; we're in the building (writing) stages of our next album , I think we have a few good ones and we're hoping to record them Early 2013.

Mollo: hope to have some new material recorded by early 2013 and then will follow up with some tour dates and other fun stuff.

Well ladies and gentleman, it's time for another fantastic Band Profile! Seriously, I love doing this. It's fun, relaxed, nothing too serious and I get to chat with amazing bands. This weeks amazing band is Shatterline. I featured them in the number one spot on my Top 5 Bands You need to hear pt 3 and I put them there for good reason. There is a raw edge and passion in what they play and how they play it. They're young, have some great talent and a long, killer road ahead. I can't wait for more from these awesome people, and I hope you all help support them on their rise up!

I got the opportunity to chat with Sean and asked him a few questions, so without adieu, here is my interview with Shatterline;

1. What is the story of Shatterline? How did you all get together?

Shatterline began in January 2011 with Dustin(Guitar) and John(Bass). They wanted to start a band with a strong emphasis on collaboration. They found Sean(guitar) and original vocalist Felicia. Together, without a drummer, we started writing songs. In March we found Jordan(Drums) and we were able to finish the songs as a complete band. This was not the current lineup of Shatterline that you hear today, however. Due to personal issues, Felicia was let go from the band, and we spent many months searching for the right vocalist. In September of 2011 we found Kelly, the current vocalist. With her solidifying the lineup, we were able to record the three-song demo that we have released. In April of 2012, John had to leave the band, due to family responsibilities. We were able to find our current Bassist, Ryan, in about two months after John's departure.

2. What are the main inspirations for the sound you have created?

We all have varying musical influences, but the three bands that really inspired us are Tool, Sevendust, and Eye Empire.

3. You got 3 kick ass tracks released, how long until we see the full album?

We still are not sure if we will release a full album anytime soon. We are almost done recording a new three-song EP though!!!

*Facebook update as of 9/11/12 - The recording phase of our new EP is DONE!!! Now onto post-production! \m/ \m/

4. How did it feel when you heard 'Break Me' played in Fox 96.9 FM? As well as with the Battle of the Bands? Was it a chilled experience? Or one filled with drunken debauchery?

It was feeling of great accomplishment! There is no greater high than knowing that people enjoy, and can identify with your music. Winning that Battle of the Bands also was a great feeling of accomplishment. We worked very hard developing our sound and stage performance. It gave us tremendous confidence to know that we, a band so young, were able to compete and hold our own head-to-head with the well established bands in the area. We did in fact get a little tipsy after winning the battle!

5. What band do you want to tour with the most?

Eye Empire (click here). We all love and respect that band SO much, it would be such a great experience to get that opportunity.

6. Best show you ever had? Worst show?

Speaking from my viewpoint, our best show had to have been that Battle of the Bands performance. Bands pull out all the stops in battle situations, and we definitely rose to the occasion! The crowd was electric that night. Worst show had to have been at Hattrix in April. Even though people said we had a great set, we ourselves just weren't feeling it that night.

7. I'm a firm believer in female fronts, but I know some are haters. Have you had any run-ins regarding these people? Or just mostly perverts and stalkers in general?

We have only had a couple negative responses regarding our band, and the reality is that when you put yourself out there, some people will love what you're doing, and others will hate it. We just keep doing what we feel is right. I don't think Kelly has ever had problems with perverts or stalkers.

8. Social media obviously plays a huge part in a bands marketing and interaction with fans. With all the different media outlets available, is it hard to keep up?

It can be, but the secret is you always need to be on top of your social media. We try to make ourselves visible in every way possible.

9. Describe to me why someone should listen to Shatterline. In 140 characters or less.

We offer a high-energy hybrid between Hard Rock and Metal with lyrics that one can identify with on a personal level.

For the record, that was an awesome description is 140 or less. Kudos.

10. What do you got coming up that people should know about?

September 15 we make our return to the Fox Valley at Star's Cabaret. October 13 we return to the Fox Valley for the Valley of Death Music Festival. November 10 we will be in Cudahy opening for BOBAFLEX.

Shatterline molds a unique blend between Hard Rock and Metal that is extremely appealing. The riffs and chorus are catchy enough to get stuck in your head for days, and they bring the screams and feeling that shows true metal love. So a little personal back story here. I first heard Katie sing as the voice of an amazing band called Jakalope back in 2004. The song was 'Pretty Life' and I was at the hospital waiting for my eldest son to be born. (There were complications so we were in the hospital for a month before he was born.) I was watching MuchMusic and saw the video and was completely blown away by her voice. So, I took a stroll over to the mall across the street and bought the album. From then on you could call me a Katie-fan.

Her lyrics are passionate, in depth and full of personality. Her voice resonates with innocence and a sultry side that is rarely heard these days. (See my Top 10 Most Romantic Songs list) She plays a mean guitar, has amazing stage presence and is the most down to earth, humble individual you will ever meet. Oh yea, she's absolutely beautiful too. Just wanted to throw that in.

But, enough gushing, I had a chance to ask her some questions and I've compiled one hell of a artist profile. Enjoy! Oh yeah and be sure to check out the end for a special announcement on something epic from Katie Rox!

2 Minute Bio:

Born and raised in Alberta (woot for home province peoples!) She developed a love for music early.

"My older sister was in singing lessons and I wanted to do everything she wanted to do, so I took lessons too. I didn't really like it at first as I was really shy (cried at my first recital!) but then I did my first singing competition and got first place! After that, it was all I ever did and wanted to do!"

From there she was working reception at The Warehouse Studio where she met Dave "Rave" Ogilvie and after one song he hired her on the spot to front a new project band called 'Jakalope'

I was asked if I might be interested (in auditioning for jakalope) and then I was given an instrumental track to see what I'd do with it. I took it home, wrote on it, and then went into the studio and sang it. That song evolved into "Don't Cry" - track here

Found success here in Canada and especially overseas in Japan. Did 2 albums with Jakalope then decided to part company and develop her own sound. She then released 3 albums under Katie Rox and is 'Flying high' (heh) playing shows all around and doing epic things.

One-On-One Question Time!

During the Jakalope days, you did vocals, lyrics, melodies and worked with some huge names in the industry. What was the one biggest lesson you carried on from those days?

I learned so many lessons I don't even know where to start. I had always been working on music, but this was my first "big time" gig, so I learned the ropes of being on a band with a label, learned about professionally touring (had not done that before) interviews, working with a heavy band (was doing acoustic music myself prior to joining the band)...it was all one giant learning curve!

Since 2008 you have released 3 albums, (4 including 'Christmas Etc.' EP) Out of all those songs, which is or are your favorite songs? And why?

Other side from my project with Sebastien is hands down one of my favorite songs I've ever been a part of. I love that song! Seb is also a such a good friend, it was so fun to collaborate together. I also really love "Airplane" as it just really means a lot to me.

What's your hidden talent or something you want to know how to do before you die?

Ha! I don't really have any hidden talents. If I can do something - I don't make it a secret!

You spent quite a lot of time over in Japan, as documented on Youtube (I will link the videos here) Describe that experience and why you were there.

I went to Japan in 2011 to play some shows. I hadn't been there since I was in Jakalope, and was really waiting for the opportunity to go when it finally presented itself. I went to another Vancouver artist, Danny Echo. Japan is an amazing place - I fell in love the first time I went and can not wait to go again and again and again!

Between travel, family, a shit ton of live shows and a cat, what do you to relax and chill? To focus your inner chi, if you will?

To chill - I go to Hawaii...or dream about going to Hawaii! Haha seriously, I have been obsessed with Hawaii since I was little, long before I ever got the chance to go. About 5 years ago I finally went and it was even better than I imagined. I go every year. Aha! I just thought of a hidden talent - I am very good at finding travel deals. :)

Social media is a huge part of your interaction with fans. Have you had any horrible experiences yet? Terrible stories about in internets? Anything?

I can't think of any particular horrible incidents on the internet...I find sometimes the internet can be a little too invasive, and of course it always sucks to read when someone says something nasty, but that's just part of it! Most of the time think it's such a wonderful way to connect with people/fans and friends - not to mention the instant feedback. As a solo artist, so much time is spent on my own, as I do everything myself. When I am on twitter or other social media sites and am interacting with fans, it reminds me there is a great support system out there - seriously, I love you guys!

If you could do a collaboration or album with one artist/band, who would that be? Why?

I would LOVE to do an album with Butch Walker. That guy is the BEST. I saw him play in LA years ago when it was with his band the Marvelous 3 and I thought he was incredible then...I even got to meet him once when he mixed at the studio I was working at. He called me his one Canadian fan...though I know that is not true! Still, he was really nice. It was really cool to meet him and to ever work with him would be a dream come true.

What's coming up for Katie Rox?

Released this update yesterday, Katie is performing in Calgary Sept. 30th for the CIBC Canadian Breast Cancer Run for the Cure. this is an amazing thing. Not just because she is performing main stage in my home town, but because she has decided to do a little fundraising for the run her self. Band Profile #1: NeverWake

Hell yes! First band profile for this blog and I thought, what the hell, let's pick one hell of a kick ass band. I featured them in the #1 spot on my Top 5 Bands You Need to Listen to. I first was introduced to NeverWake just after JohnnyD started following me on twitter. As usual when a new band follows me, I check them out see what they sound like. (I have a sick need to hear good new unheard music...) Anyways, the first song I played was 'Pulse' and seriously I stopped working and just listened. That really hasn't happened since 'Toxicity' from SOAD.

So, I investigated further, listened to everything and they were solid in my mind. Music is tight, the recording was perfect, vocals matched the music beautifully and I want more.
